Restorative Justice (RJ)
The Cheshire Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) funds a restorative justice (RJ) service across Cheshire – provided by Remedi – to help victims, offenders and communities heal after crime or conflict.
What is restorative justice (RJ)?
Restorative justice is a voluntary and confidential process that gives people harmed by a crime and those responsible, a chance to communicate.
It allows victims to explain how the crime affected them, ask questions and express what they need to move forward.
Offenders can listen, take responsibility and offer an apology.
This approach aims to help repair the harm caused and find a positive way forward. Because the process is victim-centred and respectful, many find it helps with closure and recovery.
The RJ service is managed through a central “Restorative Hub”, which works with partner organisations – including the police, probation, youth justice, local authorities prisons and others – to coordinate justice across the county.
The Hub matches cases with the right trained practitioners, ensuring the process suits everyone involved while prioritising the welfare and needs of the victim.
Referrals can come from partner agencies (e.g. police, probation) or directly from victims or offenders themselves. As long as the victim consents and there is a clear offender and offence and the crime happened in Cheshire.
If an offender requests restorative justice, the Restorative Hub handles all contact with the victim. The Hub works with all relevant agencies to ensure the process remains safe, fair and focuses on the needs of the victim.
If you are a victim and want to talk about restorative justice – or if you can represent a partner agency and wish to refer a case – you can:
- Call: 0800 640 6466
- Email: hub@remediuk.cjsm.net (opens email application)
- It gives victims a voice – a chance to be heard, ask questions and feel they are part of what happens next.
- It encourages offenders to take responsibility and understand the impact of their actions – which can reduce the likelihood of reoffending.
- It helps repair harm and supports healing, both for individuals and communities, enabling stronger relationships and trust.
RJ can be used to help people in lots of different positions. Read the impact it has had.
