INDEPENDENT OBSERVERS OF PROTESTS AND DEMONSTRATIONS ROLE PROFILE
VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITY: INDEPENDENT OBSERVERS OF THE POLICING OF PROTESTS & DEMONSTRATIONS
David Keane, the Police & Crime Commissioner for Cheshire, is offering residents an exciting opportunity to get involved in policing by volunteering to independently observe the policing of protests and demonstrations.
David said “Volunteers will gain a unique insight into policing by attending major protests or demonstrations to observe police activity and interaction with both demonstrators and the public. This is crucial to ensure that the public has a voice in policing and that both the public and I can be confident in the integrity of our police service.
Chris Uppham, Independent Observer of Protests and Demonstrations, said: “I’m a retired police officer and I use my expertise to ensure serving police officers are treating protestors and demonstrators fairly, from the initial planning stage of large police operations to on the day itself. The Independent Observers are a critical friend to the PCC and give the commissioner regular feedback on how officers can improve how they manage protests and demonstrations.”
The Independent Observers will act as ‘critical friends’ providing me with feedback on the police response to protests which will assist in holding the Chief Constable to account and help to maintain and enhance trust and confidence in policing.”
Please note that IOs cannot be serving Magistrates, police officers, police community support officers (PCSO), special constables, police staff or OPCC staff.
