POLICE & CRIME COMMISSIONER’S RESPONSE TO THE HMIC MODERN SLAVERY AND HUMAN TRAFFICKING REPORT

Posted on Tuesday 24th October

Police & Crime Commissioner for Cheshire, David Keane said:  “Modern slavery is a crime hidden behind closed doors with victims often completely controlled by their abusers and it is clear that findings from the HMIC report highlight how much more forces as a whole need to do to ensure victims of modern slavery are protected and offenders are prevented from exploiting them.

I am working closely with colleagues at a national level to ensure this issue is very much on both the policing and partnership agenda and through my commissioning funds I have funded Cheshire Anti-Slavery Network who have supported both our partners and the Constabulary to develop a cross Cheshire, cross agency strategy to tackle modern slavery.

It is essential that we all keep our eyes and ears open and educate people on how to recognise the signs of someone being exploited. This is why, in addition to the efforts of the Constabulary, I am working with Crimestoppers to see what more we can do together to engage our communities.
