A project which aims to reduce social isolation amongst older people in Crewe has been funded by Cheshire’s police and crime commissioner.
David Keane has awarded a grant from his Safer Communities Fund to help fund a project which supports vulnerable people to get involved in the upkeep of Crewe Town Park by building bird boxes and planting and maintaining a community garden.
The Barnies project is run by the Enterprise and Education Alliance, a local social enterprise which operates in the St Barnabas ward of Crewe, one of the most deprived areas in the country where many people face daily challenges of low incomes and budget constraints.
More than 100 people attend the sessions run by Barnies every week and are able to build new relationships and develop new skills.
PCC David Keane visited Barnies on a visit to Crewe local policing unit to see how they are benefiting from the funding.
He said: “My Safer Communities Fund provides support to local residents and community groups that protect vulnerable people and work to prevent crime and anti-sociable behaviour.
Projects like this are key to building community cohesion and breaking down fears and loneliness. It was fantastic to see how vulnerable people in the area are benefitting from the work that Barnies do by forming new friendships and developing new skills.”
Lesley Christiansen, leader and project development at Barnies, added: “We are delighted that the police and crime commissioner has been able to support our woodworking projects enabling us to provide new bird boxes for the birds at Crewe Park and new planters for local residents in St Barnabas Ward.
“This project will help to bring the community together, helping people to have a sense of pride in their surroundings and strengthening community cohesion.”
Barnies is one of hundreds of projects across Cheshire which has received Safer Communities Funding over the last few years to support crime prevention or meet the objectives within the commissioner’s police and crime plan.
